Pepsi Questions

Why Michael Jackson Accident Video Was Shared
Company says it doesn't know where footage from 1984 incident came from

A day after UsMagazine.com posted graphic footage of the 1984 accident in which Michael Jackson's hair caught on fire while shooting a commercial for Pepsi, the beverage maker issued a statement condemning the video's release.

"We don't know how the footage became available. Twenty-five years later, we'd question why anyone would want to share such frightening images," Pepsi spokeswoman Nicole Bradley wrote in a statement obtained by EW.com. "It was a terrifying event that we'll never forget. We were grateful for Michael's recovery and for the chance to continue working with him on a number of successful projects. As for Michael as an artist, his music helped us define a generation and, like everyone else, we're deeply saddened by his passing."

Without explaining how the footage was obtained, Us labeled the video: "How Michael Jackson's Pill Addiction Began: The harrowing, never-before-seen footage of the singer's 1984 Pepsi commercial accident."

While the story of how Jackson's hair caught fire when a pyrotechnic stunt went awry during the filming of the commercial is well known, the Us video purported to contain never-before-seen film of the accident. The shoot took place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on January 27, 1984, and featured Jackson performing with his siblings. While descending the stairs on the sixth take, a firework went off early and ignited Jackson's hair. The singer seemed unaware that his hair had caught fire at first, and even executed a few of his trademark spins, but when he turned around to walk to the back of the stage, crew members took notice and quickly extinguished the flames.

Jackson was seriously injured in the accident, suffering second- and third-degree burns to his scalp and body. According to Us, the painful recovery and multiple surgeries following the incident are said by a number of unnamed sources to be the genesis of Jackson's alleged long-time addiction to prescription painkillers and obsession with plastic surgery.

Jackson donated the $1.5 million settlement he obtained from Pepsi after the accident to the Brotman Memorial Hospital in Culver City, California, to establish the Michael Jackson Burn Center for Children.

Bradley told EW that Pepsi is not currently trying to get the footage taken down because it may not own the rights to the clip. "We don't know where it came from," she said. "We don't know what that footage is. It's 25 years ago. We don't know who owns it, so we have no recourse as far as I know. I can only tell you what I know. We didn't put it up and we don't know where it came from."

Exclusive: Pepsi responds to Michael Jackson accident footage. 'Why would anyone want to share such frightening images?'
Jul 16, 2009, 02:35 PM | by Clark Collis

Categories: An EW Exclusive!, Michael Jackson, News

Pepsi has responded to yesterday's appearance on the internet of footage of Michael Jackson being burned while filming an ad for the soft drink in 1984. Contacted by EW about the material, which was posted by US Weekly, Pepsi spokeswoman Nicole Bradley sent the following statement.

"We don't know how the footage became available. Twenty-five years later, we’d question why anyone would want to share such frightening images. It was a terrifying event that we'll never forget.

We were grateful for Michael's recovery and for the chance to continue working with him on a number of successful projects.

As for Michael as an artist, his music helped us define a generation and, like everyone else, we’re deeply saddened by his passing."

Bradley also told EW that the company is not currently attempting to get the footage taken down and that Pepsi itself may well not own the rights to the material. "We don't know where it came from," she says. "We don't know what that footage is. It's 25 years ago. We don’t know who owns it, so we have no recourse as far as I know. I can only tell you what I know. We didn't put it up and we don't know where it came from."

Someone sold it to the papers. It's so disgusting. People will rape their children for money. That's what I've learned from MJ's death.

I can't see Pepsi releasing it. I mean, why the hell would they? As their spokesperson said, the image is gruesome and is just not something that you put out there.

I just can't understand people or why anyone would place such a video into the public arena. I also have to question the so-called "news" networks who decided to talk about it as if it wasn't as old as dirt.

On the flip side, those casual fans or non-fans have looked at this video and from their responses to it, it actually made them feel even more terrible for the way Michael had been treated while living. They seem to realize some of the things the man has been through. Go fig.

It has been reported that a member of Michael's staff snatched the tape right after the accident.

Figures. All of Michael's other videos/photographs have been leaking since June 25.

The release of that video has gotten people thinking that maybe this is the reason why he started having plastic surgery, the straight laced front wigs, prescription drugs, etc. Like I said in the other thread, it is humanizing MJ. People are starting to understand where he was coming from when he did some of the things he did. One of my coworkers today said that he had such a hard life. She wasn't necessarily a fan, but people are opening their eyes to what MJ had to endure. So I'm not angry that the video got released.

They just never believed Michael. It's pathetic how now that there is confirmation of many of the things he was saying people are waking up. Idiots.

some people never really paid much attention. They weren't haters or fans. They were impartial, didn't care, not their cup of tea, etc. It didn't make them bad people. However, with some of the things coming out, it is making them think a little different of MJ....it's really not a bad thing.

I do not buy Pepsi's argument that they do NOT know who owns the footage.

The footage is owned by the advertiser who commissioned it/paid for it. In this case, that would be Pepsi.

There maybe some joint ownership by MJJ Productions, but how can Pepsi not own the derivative footage.

Unless Branca and Mcclain have somehow conveniently leaked this to help push the MJ "addicted" crap.

I don't trust them.

As much as I hate to admit it, its true. I was watching the early morning news on CNN and one of the female anchor's was saying how untill that footage she never really knew how much pain Michael must have been in and the affects it must have caused over the years blah blah. Then on talking on the phone with a friendm she was going on about "poor MJ, he had an unlucky life" and yada yada. It is SAD that it has to come to seeing someone in pain for people to stop passing judgements. Bastards. Isn't this what Michael and his family, friends and fans have been telling these people all these years?

Well it doesn't change the fact that they are still sad and pathetic. That it takes stuff like this to sink into their thick heads. So as I said before they're scumbags.

I don't trust Branca & McClain either, (Weitzman too). There is also Murray's & Klein's attorney & any other doctors under investigation to make MJ a doctor shopping drug junkie so they don't have responsibility. Schaffel is with Klein & perhaps he got a copy of the footage. Dr. Klein's ex lover is the one saying Klein is the bio father of MJ kids.
