Madonna Wrote Michael Jackson VMA Speech 'From My Heart'
'It was a privilege and an honor for me to say what I had to say,' singer says of dedication.

After delivering her heartfelt tribute to the late Michael Jackson at the VMAs, Madonna talked with MTV News' Jim Cantiello about her speech backstage.

"Michael Jackson was born in August 1958," her speech began. "So was I. Michael Jackson grew up in the suburbs of the Midwest. So did I. Michael Jackson had eight brothers and sisters. So do I. When Michael Jackson was 6 he became a superstar and was perhaps the world's most beloved child. When I was 6 my mother died. I think he got the shorter end of the stick."

She went on to talk about the time they spent together, her admiration for his talent, his "vulnerability and charm," and her sons' love for his music.

After the show, with a somber face, Madonna explained just how much the dedication to Jackson meant to her.

"[It was] extremely important because I didn't really have my chance to pay my last respects to him or speak of him in the way that I wanted to," the Material Girl said. "It was a privilege and an honor for me to say what I had to say.

"[It] took me all week to write [the speech], and I just wrote it from my heart," she added. "And I kept slashing and burning and editing."

While she did admit that she left out some choice MJ anecdotes, it was purely in the interest of time.

"I really cut it down. It was painful," she said. "I said what I had to say at the end of the day."

Thank you. That's really nice. Apart from the "abandoned"-part. I don't think people should put blame on themselves when there's nothing to feel guilty for, because mostly it wasn't like he was running after them anyway.

I think the "We abandoned him..." part could have meant just phoning him and saying "Hi" little things like that.

If he had cared enough he would have called up himself. JMO. But I do not want to drag her speech into a negative light. That's just one thing that popped up in my head when I heard it. It was a great speech after all.

That 'abandoned' part didn't refer to us, his fans. We've always showed interest & love in MJ. It's the general public that let him down esp. the Hollywood crowd.

Exactly! I'm not sure where the controvery is about that part in her speech because Madonna was 100% right about what she said. People did abandon him in the general public and the enterainment industry. She spoke about the witch hunt and lynch mob concerning MJ and she was so right. Many were out to get him (The media, sneddon, etc.) but I think what was most hurtful for Michael is that people who MJ thought were his friends like Brooke Shields and others didn't even support him during the trial or rough times he was going through. Many in the industry distanced themselves from him and didn't have a kind or supportive word to say about him when asked in public. Many even declined to work with Michael on the Katrina single when he asked them to because of all the controversies. So many turned their backs on him.

No, see many of them as Madonna said, were too busy passing judgement and making jokes at his expense. I loved when Madonna said that. And I know many in the audience like Jimmy Fallon and many others must have felt pretty crappy at that point for how they helped to humiliate Michael and pass judgement on him.

Anyway, good on Madonna for writing that speech. I could tell it was heartfelt. I have much respect for her for this.

Madonna wasn't referring to fans but the public in general, people who grew up with MJ, and maybe Michael's own so-called "friends" too.

Why would it be Michael to phone them? It's really hard to do that when you don't know what people think of you, he was the butt of everybody's jokes and people attacked him. People liked him when he was on top, then the negativity began. And his "friends", the very people he counted on to be there for him during his darkest hours, were the ones saying stuff like "I know the music, not the man...", "the trial was a blessing"...etc., etc... It was like the cool, in thing to do was to make jokes about him and join the "Bully Michael" bandwagon...

"They" should be the ones to phone him and let him know it's ok, that he can count on them.
But instead, he was standing very much alone during those times. He was abandoned.

Everything Madonna said was so true. I guess that's why up to now, I still cry at the slightest kind thing people say about Michael now. When he was alive, he never heard those come out of their mouths. Almost all he heard were jokes and insults.

BTW, Michael cared enough to phone people that he knew cared about him too. He phone the mother of Martin Luther King's kids all the way from Bahrain, didn't he? They told that story during the memorial.

Yup. the people who thought it was "cool" to vilify Michael.

I wanted to punch Jimmy Fallon in the face when they showed him during Madonn'as speech.

Some fans did abandon him and some were worse than the media from many posts I read even as of recent. Kept picking on his appearance and crap like that and the man is gone.

Even before he passed those that fell off because of his choice of marriages or lifestyle or those that criticized him and doubted he had Vitiligo.

The ones that passed judgement on his kids kept bringing up DNA or just tearing them down to do so.

The ones that thought it was okay to stalk him and make up lies run up on this and many other boards and had fans believing the crap and starting chaos not only in messageboards but in e-mails and enjoying it or feeding into the garbage because some salivate at thought of being on the inside or in the know.

Hanging out his home all times of the night even in support I guess the excitement made us forget that is private property. When we gained that sense of entitlement yet lying to ourselves saying He WANTED THAT or he LOVES THAT he KNOWS what he's doing.

Hanging on to employees words and kissing @ss defending hard on employees and friends who turned out to be SNAKES!!! Becoming fans of them in death as if they are the connection we need come on now I'm not gonna sugar coat crap around here.

When we would gather round when he couldn't go shopping and went clamoring for new pictures or chase him down for autographs not thinking dang can't he just get some time with his kids or just go pick up diapers or pack of gum without worrying about being mobbed? Can he go to the doctors office without fans planning his untimely death speculating BS until what happened on June 25th.

When we was picking on his style of dress or the children style of dress hair and anything he did

Oh WHY he wearing women clothes
WHY he looking like that
Blanket needs a hair cut
WHY they are wearing masks

MIKE SHOULD
Michael SHOULD
BLAH BLAH BLAAAAAAH

Sales THIS
WORK THAT
Wannabe PR experts

I noticed since Madonna's speech those same motherf/kers are not squawking!!

That was pointed at everybody we all had a hand in that!
